An associate of mine related a story to me the other day about her first day of work at her 'dream job'. Being eager to get going and make an impression my friend made it into work on her first day early. She was to meet with the HR manager at 8:30 to fill out her employment documents and go through a brief orientation. At 9:00 the HR manager was still tracking down the appropriate forms, leaving my friend waiting in the conference room by herself. She finally finished the orientation and paperwork at 10:30 and was led to her new office. Upon sitting down at her desk, she realized that she had no phone and her access codes for her computer were not working. The phone was delivered a few hours later and access to her computer was delayed two days. Her 'dream job' had quickly lost some of its luster and she was disappointed that the company that had courted and recruited her was just another big company. She's not alone. Many new hires report that they are not properly equipped with the necessary tools to 'hit the ground running' on their first day of work.
There are a few simple things that you can do to ensure a positive first experience for your newest team member.
- Meet with your HR team and the hiring manager a week before your new employee's start date and map out a plan. Create an itinerary for the first day and send it to the new hire so she knows what to expect
- Follow up with the HR manager the day before the start date to make sure there are no changes and that all paperwork is in order.
- Be on time to greet the new hire on their first day.
- Create a list of the necessary tools (computer, software, business cards, access codes, email addresses, phone extensions, company directories etc.) that the new hire will need.
- Meet with the responsible departments with your checklist and ensure that the tools are in place and ready before the employee starts.
It's that easy! As the old saying goes "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."
