 Job Description
Job Summary: Assist in providing primary pediatric care to children and adolescents in an ambulatory setting under the direction of the Nurse Manager and Medical Director. Cross cover in other sections or departments if necessary. Rotation to evenings and weekends as needed. The Phlebotomist demonstrates skill in pediatric phlebotomy and skin puncture techniques following all patient care and department policy and procedure guidelines. The phlebotomist acts as a primary laboratory representative to the patient. He/she is responsible for a timely and accurate collection of clinically acceptable specimens with proper identification of all patient information and transporting, processing and storing the laboratory specimens.

Skills & Abilities: Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychological, developmental, social, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in their section. Demonstrate skills in processing laboratory specimens and in operation as well as maintenance of centrifuges. Good interpersonal and telephone communication skills. Computer skills and knowledge of basic medical terminology is essential. Phlebotomist performing testing or other tasks that require color discrimination should be able to distinguish colored items pertinent to the job.

Accurate weights, heights, head circumferences, blood pressure, urine dip, finger stick for hemocue or blood sugar, injections (immunizations and other medications identified per department), phlebotomy, hearing and vision testing, effective interpersonal oral and written communication skills, respond to unpredictable situations in a calm manner while exercising good judgment.

Training & Education: High School graduate, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), Graduate of accredited Medical Assistant Program and Medical Assistant certification or Certified Phlebotomist training is preferred. Computer training on Microsoft Windows based systems.

Experience: A minimum of one year in pediatric phlebotomy and computer data entry experience in a clinical or laboratory setting is preferred.

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Required Licenses: Medical Assistant Certification or Certified Phlebotomist training, CPR Certification by the American Heart Association.
